Artistic Director

Stephen Alexander Lloyd, Artistic Director and Conductor of the Youth Symphony Orchestra. Born in Australia, he received his musical training in Sydney, Manchester, and Vienna. In addition to his work as a conductor, he composes and arranges for various clients. He co-founded the Bolzano Musical School, was a choral conductor at the Italian Music Institute, and, together with his wife, Irene Troi, directed the South Tyrol Music Camp, which won the Nikolaus Harnoncourt Prize of the Canton of Zurich in 2003. He is also the Artistic Director of the Matteo Goffriller South Tyrol Youth Orchestra (JSOMG). All musicals at the Vereinigte Bühnen Bozen were created under his musical direction, including “Evita” (2004), “Jesus Christ Superstar” (2005), “West Side Story” (2006 & 2017), “Jekyll & Hyde” (2007), “Into The Woods” (2008), “Cabaret” (2009), “A Cage Full of Fools” (2010), “Hair” (2011), “My Fair Lady” (2012), Ballhaus (2013), Anatevka (2015) and Sunset Boulevard (2019). He also composed the music for the children’s plays “Zorbas the Cat”, “Around the World in 80 Days”, “The Little Prince” and “The Little Witch” at the Vereinigte Bühnen Bozen. Between 2008 and 2017, Stephen Lloyd was a lecturer at the Free University of Bozen. He composed the music for “Natalie, the Light Musical Show” in 2018, is musical supervisor for “Hair” in Milan, and is orchestrating a new musical for Giorgio Moroder that will be released in 2020...
Irene Troi, Director of the String Development Program, was born in South Tyrol and received her first violin lessons in Brixen at the age of seven. She then continued her studies at the Claudio Monteverdi Conservatory in Bolzano and then went on to the Vienna University of Music, where she graduated in 1989 with a diploma in concert violin under Prof. Günter Pichler. After completing her studies, Irene Troi began an active concert life on both the modern violin and the baroque violin. She was concertmaster of the Ensemble Baroque de Limoges and the Ensemble Mosaique under the direction of Christophe Coin and is a violinist in the Concentus Musicus Vienna, under the direction of Nikolaus Harnoncourt until 2016. In addition to her work as an international chamber musician, Irene Troi devotes herself intensively to young South Tyrolean string players. She leads baby camps, children's camps, and two string orchestras for children and young people. Until June 2019, she was a lecturer at the Faculty of Educational Sciences at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano. She also led the South Tyrol Music Camp with her husband, Stephen Lloyd, for which they received the Nikolaus Harnoncourt Prize of the Canton of Zurich in April 2003. Since 2006, she and her husband have led the South Tyrol Youth Symphony Orchestra, which became the Matteo Goffriller Youth Symphony Orchestra (JSOMG) in 2016. She co-directs the Attergau Youth String Orchestra with Austrian cellist Matthias Bartolomey. Irene Troi is the first prize winner of the Hubert von Goisern Cultural Prize in 2018.
